Surviving and Thriving in your Multicultural Workplace

This conference weaves together elements of philosophy, psychology, and metaphysics to examine how humans function as creative meaning-makers, and how we learn, grow and evolve. It looks at how the different “others” in a multicultural workplace that annoy us can be either the path to life-long learning, or a shortcut to frustration. Themes raised include intelligence as an obstacle to wisdom, chaos and order, being and doing, awareness, and personal integrity.

You will leave with a greater ability to choose and apply the types of self-reflectiveness and relational strategies that offer a rewarding way forward. You might even acquire an appreciation for the colleagues that frustrate you most!

Who is Daniel?

Daniel Haeberlé is a personal, professional and organisational development consultant, and facilitator. He holds a Bachelors of Applied Sciences (Aeronautical Engineering) and a Masters of Business Administration, but his self-directed learning has proven more useful. He has been providing professional and organisational development services to multinational and supra-national organisations for 30 years. His work with the EU Institutions began in 2000 as Founding Partner of AIM & Associés.

As a young man, Daniel found most approaches to intercultural communication to be useless in helping him deal with both sustained intercultural collaboration and his own Canadian-French biculturality. He decided to try to do something about that. Many years and much research later, Daniel’s work is about supporting transformational learning through the development of the capacity for presence and self-reflection.

The series of practical tools and methods presented will lead participants to:

  • Improve their knowledge around fake news, hoax, buzz, bias and urban legends.
  • Question the roles of experts and non-experts in communication in the age of Fake News.
  • Improve their information processes on their own and with the help of digital tools.
  • Organise reflections of critical thinking around the main themes of their work.

Fake News, Rumours and Urban Legends: Why Are They So Successful?

Rumours, urban legends, hoaxes, fake news, conspiracy theories, and misinformation are only a fraction of the numerous terms that refer to questionable content, but do they all mean the same thing?

How are rumours and false news created? Why are they so successful? Why do we promote them and believe in them? How can we recognise, verify or deconstruct them? How can we warn those who wrongfully believe in their truthfulness and share them without double checking? These questions and more will be answered in this conference!

Who is Aurore?

Aurore Van de Winkel is a doctor in Information and Communication, Scientific Collaborator at the Catholic University of Louvain and a consultant. She has been working for about fifteen years on the subject of rumours. She has been passionate about stories since her childhood and worked on urban legends for her thesis. She thus became aware of the impact that false stories can have on our opinions and our behaviour.

With her knowledge of the mechanisms of rumours and her ability to make quick and relevant diagnoses on problematic situations, Aurore then decided to provide her advice to organisations and people affected by the noise they create. More information about Aurore’s work can be found here.

Diagnose, Prevent, Act and React to a Burn-out

Burn-out signals a rupture in the process of fulfilment that the subject associates with their work. The process of healing then comes through a return to oneself in order to re-evaluate one’s professional aspirations and one’s limits. During this conference, we will discuss the different forms of burn-out: emotional, identity or motivational burn-out. In doing so we will be able to diagnose them precisely and to set up an effective prevention.
